Etymology
Old French droge meant a supply or stock; in English, the word specialized in substances used to prepare medicines. Its application to narcotics and opiates developed later.
In context
it's also often used as an anesthesia during surgeries or for pain management in terminal cancer patients in fact some doctors might even prescribe the drug for pain relief after an injury
