Latin fructus covered produce and crops generally. English fruit likewise once included vegetables, nuts, and grain before narrowing to the familiar edible, seed-bearing plant part.
In context
we call the pit so think of peaches plums and cherries they all have pits so a pit is a hard covering around the seed the outermost part of the fruit called the exocarp becomes a relatively thin skin
