Etymology
Latin largus covered both plentiful supply and generosity. The modern size sense keeps the idea of abundance, applied to physical dimensions, quantity, or extent.
In context
in the deepest of them, the mouths could be very large. This mouth, which is now blocked up, belongs to a 60-m-deep inspection shaft.
