A tree with compound leaves and often fragrant flowers.
The locust beside our porch fills the air with fragrant blossoms.
Etymology
The tree-name was transferred from the name of the locust insect, through an older association involving the carob and its pods. American locust trees acquired the name by resemblance to the pod-bearing carob.
