A soft, dull sound made by something falling or being set down.

The heavy tote lands on the bench with a soft plop.

An older East Asian woman abruptly plops a bulging canvas tote onto a low wooden bench; its soft base spreads against the seat as her hands release the handles.

Etymology

The word imitates the sound of a smooth object dropping into water. That sound supplies the image for a sudden drop or for setting something down heavily.
