The relay continues as one runner passes the baton to another.
Etymology
A reserve pack replaced hounds that tired during a chase. This replacement pattern extended to workers taking turns and then to races in which successive participants take over.
In context
I've always considered this project a relay race and for a brief period of time, I had the privilege of being the relay runner.
