An arrangement of equipment fitted for a purpose.

The sailors rig the boat with ropes and a secured sail.

An older sailor equips a small sailboat for use by threading its sail-control rope through a pulley while a second sailor secures the sail to the mast.
Etymology

The equipping sense began with making a ship ready for sea, then broadened to preparing things for use. Dishonest arranging may be a different word, connected with a noun meaning “trick” or “swindle,” itself of unknown origin.
