Ascalonia designated an onion associated with the port of Ascalon. That place-based name survives in scallion for a young onion, and shallot shares the same ancestry.
In context
Basically, they have this really long stalk, and they don't produce the bulb. So, the true scallion doesn't, actually, produce the bulb. It's a cultivar of the onion species, but it's non-bulb producing.
