noun / verb

shoe

SHOO/ʃuː/

A protective covering fitted around the foot.

This brown leather shoe has laces and a protective sole.

A single recognizable brown leather lace-up shoe, viewed from above at a three-quarter angle so its foot-shaped enclosure, opening, laces, and protective sole are clearly visible.
Etymology

Old English scōh already meant a shoe, so the modern sense preserves an inherited name for a foot covering. The same word was later extended to the protective metal covering on a horse’s hoof.
