A tool with jaws that grip something firmly, or to grip as if with one.
The vise grips a wooden block between its jaws.
Etymology
The winding shape of a vine tendril gave rise to the sense “screw.” The tool takes its name from the screw that closes its jaws around an object.
In context
I've got to reverse that bend. And the only way to do that is to mount it in the vise and then put a a tube over the top here and then just give it a good heave ho.
