A raised mark on the skin caused by a blow or irritation.
An itchy welt rises on her arm after a mosquito bite.
Etymology
The earlier welt was a leather strip in shoemaking, later a raised border or ridge. That ridge supplied the image for a swollen mark on skin; its deeper origin is uncertain.
In context
as a welt goes away a new one pops up somewhere else so it may seem as though the rash is spreading but if you pay close attention each individual welt only lasts usually a few hours
