adjective / verb / noun

bankrupt

BANGK-rupt/ˈbæŋkrʌpt/

Unable to pay outstanding debts.

The bankrupt debtor faces the judge with almost no money.

A debtor's visibly exhausted funds are formally assessed in court: an empty purse and a few remaining coins sit opposite several substantial creditor files while a judge stamps the case papers.
Etymology

The “broken bench” was probably a figurative image of a failed moneylender’s business, giving bankrupt its sense of being unable to pay debts.
