A requirement for something necessary or strongly desired.
The thirsty hiker needs some water to drink.
Etymology
Old English neodian could mean both “be necessary” and “require something.” The modern verb preserves the second perspective: someone needs a thing because that thing is necessary for a purpose.
In context
that's why contracts matter in construction because we need all these different parties to work together. We need them to form agreements and the contract is the legal tool that formalizes this agreement.
